Thurnham is a beautiful and historic parish located on the edge of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, approximately three miles north east of Maidstone. The parish is surrounded by stunning countryside and enjoys a unique blend of rural charm, heritage, and community spirit.

The parish includes the villages and communities of Thurnham, Bearsted Park and parts of the surrounding countryside, with many residents enjoying access to some of Kent’s most scenic walking routes including the famous Pilgrims’ Way and nearby White Horse Wood Country Park. The historic ruins of Thurnham Castle and the Grade I listed Church of St Mary the Virgin form an important part of the parish’s rich history and character.

Thurnham Parish covers approximately 3,194 acres, much of which lies within protected landscape areas including the Kent Downs National Landscape (formerly Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Despite its peaceful rural setting, the parish benefits from excellent transport links and close proximity to Maidstone and the wider Kent area.

Thurnham Parish Council is made up of nine elected councillors who work on behalf of the community to represent residents’ interests, maintain and improve local facilities, comment on planning applications, and support the protection and enhancement of the parish for future generations. The Council also works closely with Maidstone Borough Council, Kent County Council, local organisations and residents on matters affecting the parish.
