Thurnham Parish Council

About Thurnham Parish Council

“Representing and serving the residents of Thurnham Parish.”

Thurnham Parish Council is the first tier of local government representing the residents of Thurnham Parish. The Council is made up of nine elected Councillors who serve the community and work together to protect and enhance the parish for the benefit of residents both now and in the future.

Councillors are elected every four years and volunteer their time to represent local views, consider issues affecting the parish, and make decisions on behalf of the community. The Parish Council works closely with Maidstone Borough Council, Kent County Council, local organisations, and residents on a wide range of matters affecting the parish.

The Council is responsible for representing the interests of the community and commenting on planning applications and local developments which may affect the parish. It also works to help preserve the unique rural character, landscape, and historic identity of Thurnham whilst supporting improvements and services that benefit residents.

Meetings of Thurnham Parish Council are usually held on the third Monday of each month, with the exception of August. Meetings are currently held at the Marriott Tudor Park Hotel and members of the public are warmly welcomed to attend. Residents are encouraged to participate in local decision-making and there is an opportunity at meetings for members of the public to raise matters or ask questions relating to issues affecting the parish.

The Council is supported by a Parish Clerk who is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Council, including preparing agendas and minutes, managing correspondence, maintaining financial records, and ensuring the Council operates in accordance with local government legislation and procedures.

The Parish Council raises funding through a local precept, which forms part of the Council Tax paid by households within the parish. This funding helps support the running of the Council and the maintenance and improvement of local facilities and services.

Thurnham Parish Council remains committed to serving the community, protecting the character of the parish, and supporting the needs of residents whilst helping to shape the future of the area in a positive and responsible way.
